[INTERVIEW] “I noticed most people who can’t even take proper measurement call themselves designer.” — TOLUWALASE SETONJI; CEO, Teez Couture & Interiors

Toluwalase Setonji Sadique hails from Badagry. He has a first degree in Business Administration and is the CEO of Teez Couture & interiors. In this interview, he talks tough on his educational background and takes us into the world of his shoemaking business. Excerpts:

You studied Business Administration, would you like to tell us more about your educational background?

I am from Badagry west local government. I had my first school leaving certificate from Yesefem Precious Children School in Ogba, Ikeja, then my SSCE from Baptist Bowen College in Isabo-Itire, Surulere. So, I have a first degree in Business Administration from Houdegbe North American University in Benin, Cotonou.

What motivated you to start a shoemaking business?

Actually I love fashion and fashion begins with us. I have been doing this business even before I gained admission into the university. So it’s not what I can put aside. I will keep doing this business because I enjoy doing it even if I end up doing a white collar job, I’m not sure I can put it aside.

How did you start Teez Couture?

We started with clothing line but I noticed most people who can’t even take proper measurement call themselves designer, so we decided to stand out by going into shoes and we thank God we are not where we used to be when we started.

Would you like to share with us how you came about your brand name – Teez Couture?

My brand name is Teez Couture. Actually, Teez was derived from my name Toluwalase while Couture means the design and production of fashionable high quality handmade cloth or shoes. Teez Couture was founded in the year 2009. We do strictly made in Nigeria foot wears.

Where is Teez Couture located?

In Ogba, Ikeja and we also provide mobile shop as well. So, we are everywhere and we deliver nationwide too.

What type of shoes do you make?

All types of shoes from brogue, moccasins to divas, slip on, ballet shoe and so on. We make from size 37- size 50 which is the big feet.

What is your scale of production?

We work on comfortability, durability and affordability. So, we produce both on demand and in a reasonable amount.

From 2009 when you started fast forward to this year 2016, how would you describe your business in terms of sales and feedback?

Our clients give great testimonies about our products and we thank God for the journey so far. We make sales and offer discounts almost every festive period. We are starting another discount sales in a few days due to the upcoming Ramadan celebration.

At the moment, how many people are working with you?

I only have six (6) people.

If there’s anything you can do in the twinkle of an eye, what could it be?

Hmmmmmmm. I can make a slippers in twinkle of an eye!

As a typical Nigerian, what’s your favourite meal?

Ofada rice, amala and ewedu.

If you weren’t a business owner, what would you have become?

I would have become a Banker.

  1. Government should invest in vibrant young enterprises like this than saying “employment for all youth” . People like toluwalase will take the country outside it’s shell and motivate all youth to “empowerment for youth”
